The Industrial Age was when London had the great stink, with sewage problems,. Yet the population was growing, people were moving there for the work and hoping for a better living. So, this made the Industry grow, and factories boom. These were gloomy times but people pretended that they were so happy...There is a word in the text that was used to express this pretense state of mind . Felicitas Phildor: The question isn't abo! ut how the world will end and its cause--nature or machines.It's looking back--saying that there had been the Romantic notion that Nature was the most powerful force. Then along came the Industrial Revolution, which celebrated the power and importance of machines.The question is: How was this belief/faith in machines evident in the Industrial Age?I don't want to write the answer for you, but look at what happened in the Industrial Age. The things that most seemed to affect society were inventions. Machines. And in many cases there was the belief that the machines actually could counteract or overcome nature. Expand on that thought with some examples. (Hint: Airplanes overcoming gravity...except when you have experiences like the Hindenburg. Or ships overcoming oceans...except when you have experiences like the Titanic.)Hope that helps....Show more
