Sook Hershkowitz: To my knowledge, the word "alluding" means the same thing as "referencing". Authors provide certain quotations that are in reference to something else, and by using this reference, the readers can usually discern some subtlety. For example, in MLK Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, his opening line was "Five score and seven years ago...", clearly alluding to Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. MLK Jr. was implying that there were parallels between what was happening at the time and what happened during the time of the Gettysburg Address....Show more
