looking for card games to improve math skills?

Willie Tun: They have those awesome math flash cards. Not really a game though. I guess war and 21 are best but that's really only adding and subtraction.

Aubrey Tirri: Poker...you can just teach him the basic game and then get into calculating pot odds, implied odds, etc. As he reaches higher levels of math and he is interested in poker, there are very advanced math lessons in there. If you are not sure what these are you can just go to any poker blog or pick up a book. It is extremely helpful and the basic math is perfect for a 5th grader.

Wilbur Marksberry: poker. poker is VERY good for maths. To learn about the percentage and chance you have of making a hand or of a card being dealt.also after a hand is won or loss you have to do a simple addition or subtraction question and example: the uncle is dealt ACE of spades 10of diamondsthe nephew is dealt 4 of clubs 6 of clubs the flop (1st 3 cards to be dealt after u recieve your pocket cards e.g. for u that! s the ace 10)ace of clubs, 5 of diamonds, 7 of clubsyou can then ask ur nephew to work out the odds of him hitting a flush or a straight which is about 33 % chance of the straight and about 36% chance for the flush to work out the straight you would say "ok you can hit a 3 or an 8 hit your straight" there are four 3's in the deck and four 8's in the deck.. each single card has just under a 2% chance of coming out. so there are 8 cards in the deck ur nephew could hit to get the straight 8 x 2 = 16 % chance to hit the straight on the turn (fourth card dealt) and another 16% to hit the straight on the river (the fifth and final card dealt) say your nephew hit the straight and your hand did not improve so your nephew won the hand ... there would of been betting when u recieved your 1st cards (pocket cards) then betting after the flop (1st 3 cards dealt) then betting on the turn (fourth card) then betting on the river(fifth and final card). that involves simple adding in itself.! say you both started with 2000 chips (what you bet with) and 6! 00 of them went into the pot (where you put the money when u bet) then take away 600 from your chipstack (because you lost sorry :P) and 600 from his stack to make the pot 1200 then give it to him so your left with 1400 chips and he has 2600 chips. its a great game that teaches you on the spot mental maths. make it even more worthet by giving him something when he gets it right lol....Show more

Branden Roddick: Poker ( play for candy)

Virgilio Echter: Speed

Pasquale Pollet: Canasta. As you play, the number of cards you have to collect before you can start making books goes up, so he'll have to do some math quickly in his head to figure out if he can start making books or must keep drawing cards.

Evelin Turlich: Uno.
