Ollie Desalvo: A hobby is what you spend your spare time doing. So if you spend your spare time gaming then that is your hobby. Your teacher needs to read the dictionary.
Jacques Teri: I consider it a hobby just as much as stamp collecting, etc.
Virgil Loatman: In 21st century it should be considered a hobby
Gilberto Cratin: A hobby is more than just doing an activity in your spare time. The mere playing of games is not a hobby, no matter what those who are sensitive about it say in their defense. For gaming to be a hobby, you would, in addition to playing, need to do one or more of these other things: Actively build a collection of games with collecting as the primary goal and playing as a side benefit (and a true collector would never open a game, never mind play it).Build a collection of KNOWLEDGE about the subject. The history, who the fathers of modern gaming are or were, how the industry has progressed, how the medium has had an effect on or even c! hanged society.Join, or even form one yourself, a club or 'league' for competitive play, where scores are recorded and documented in a printable medium, not somewhere in 'the cloud'. Online gaming rooms with anonymous players does not count. Real-life human interaction with people (or with nature if it's a 'solo' hobby done outdoors) is an absolute must....Show more
Vernon Martorana: Hobbies always produce a product or usable knowledge not otherwise attainable. Gaming on a computer does neither unless one considers moving and clicking a mouse as usable knowledge. The asker is obviously trolling for someone to agree, and some will, but that doesn't mean playing games on a computer qualifies.
Jonathan Schlussel: I had a student once, 18 years old. I asked him what his hobbies were and her said video gaming. Two or three times a week he gathered with his friends and played Online games for several hours at a time. They prepared sufficient snacks and drinks for th! eir endeavours, planned strategies and worked together to carr! y out a function within their group. For me as a teacher to turn round and say "That is not a hobby" would be churlish in the extreme. This is an activity that he and his friends choose to do. They discuss it, consider their next plans and take it seriously. There is no reason in the modern world why complex games should not be considered worthy of being a hobby. We'll acknowledge chess as a hobby, bridge, backgammon and poker as valid hobbies. Playing Collectable Card Games is a hobby. Train spotting, reading and birdwatching are all valid hobbies, so denying that someone who plays and enjoys video games in their spare time is snobbish at best.If you play games regularly, read the news and reviews, talk about it amongst fellow gamers, play online and make intelligent, considered choices about your next game, then sure, it's a hobby. You get to define what your hobbies are, not your teachers and not complete strangers....Show more
Weldon Totaro: Gaming isn't a hobby i! n the traditional definition. It is an ACTIVITY. Hobbies tend to produce something physical, such as a painting or a wood carving is produced... or a hobby accumulates something physical and actual, as stamp collecting or a shell collection. But more recently many have come to regard sedentary activities as hobbies too, so consider reading romance novels as a hobby and gaming as a hobby.I expect next on the list will be daydreaming.. as a hobby....Show more
Bailey Lares: What did your teacher say when you asked? You did ask, right? If not, you're wasting our time by asking us.
Pasquale Pollet: Its just subjective. I wouldn't fight it too hard with the teacher. One teacher's opinion isn't that big of deal if you ask me. I'd call it a hobby.
Hermina Ketring: I consider it a hobby. Now a days you can get paid for playing video games on YouTube and Twitch (if you're good enough and if people like you) and thousands of people make a living having a gaming! channel on YouTube and livestreaming on Twitch. So yeah, I'd consider ! it a hobby and productive.
Chris Coggins: Maybe they forgot what the word means. lol
Whitney Saborido: Its not productive unlike other arts and craft such as painting, Turn your game console off and nothing is there, just a saved hi score.
Clifford Gombos: if golf and curling and bowling are sports then gaming is a hobby your teacher is a daft **** who cant keep her own biased opinion out of it
Jesse Pirieda: It IS a hobby.I can only suggest you ask your teacher what they meant.
Simona Bulwinkle: Is singing a hobby? If I just sing, what is different from sitting in front of a computer and playing what the game offers. Singing can be a formal hobby - organized with kinds of songs, choral, etc. Gaming can be a competition, but you can't change the game by playing - cosplay is an attempt to make a hobby activity.
Whitney Saborido: A lot of people would consider video gaming (I'm assuming you mean video gaming) a hobby, but it sounds like y! our teacher already has a mental list of what he/she defines as a "hobby". If that's the case, then there's probably nothing that you can say that will change the teacher's opinion, but I'd try to just let it go if you can and don't let it bother you. Some people just have really weird opinions, that's all.
Alphonso Brake: Well Tabletop gaming (Such as Battletech, D&D, Warhammer, Ect.) is.Video Gaming, IMO is not.
