Pattie Vold: Router:A network layer device that uses one or more metrics to determine the optimal path along which network traffic should be forwarded. Routers forward packets from one network to another based on network layer information. Occasionally called a gateway, although this definition of gateway is becoming increasingly outdatedGateway:In the IP community, an older term referring to a routing device. Today, the term router is used to describe nodes that perform this function, and gateway refers to a special-purpose device that performs an application layer conversion of information from one protocol stack to another. ref: Cisco...Show more

Dallas Bartolini: My definition:Routers are used to split an Internet connection so two or more com! putures can share an Internet connection. A router also allows you to connect two computers together so you can share files/printers, etc. between two or more computers. Not sure about gateways...Internet definition:A router is a computer networking device that buffers and forwards data packets across an internetwork toward their destinations, through a process known as routing. Routing occurs at layer 3 (the Network layer e.g. IP) of the OSI seven-layer protocol stack.Internet definition: * Gateway (telecommunications), in telecommunications is a computer or a network that allows or controls access to another computer or network. * Gateway (computer networking), a node that serves as an entrance to another network, and vice-versa. The meaning of this term has altered subtly in recent years, however. * Gateway (web page), a webpage designed to attract visitors and search engines to a particular website. * Payment gateway, the software interface between a web-bas! ed shopping cart and a merchant account. * Gateway (compute! r program), a link between two computer programs allowing them to share information and bypass certain protocols on a host computer. Although seemingly harmless, a gateway can have tremendous negative effects on personal computers if not used properly....Show more
